Check out New Hyde Park’s hottest new European bistro, Brasserie 214, and don’t forget one of their “Pink Drinks.” $2 from every “Pink Drink” purchased in October (breast cancer awareness month) will be donated to the Maurer Foundation. Thanks guys!

Brasserie 214, located at 214 Jericho Turnpike, is a unique European-style eatery whose menu features classics from Belgium, France, Tuscany, Germany, Holland and Scandinavia. While traditional Central European cuisine tends to be fat- and meat-heavy and diets high in saturated fat are big risk factors for breast cancer, we found some health-friendly and downright cancer-preventative items on their delectable-looking menu:

Appetizers

  • Jumbo Shrimp Martini (Scandinavian inspired jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, Vodka-laced Tomato Horseradish Sauce) — Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, jumbo shrimp were named by Dr. Oz as one of 4 anti-cancer superfoods. Add tomatoes, a source of the cancer-fighting antioxidant lycopene, and horseradish, which has substantial quantities of glucosinolates, and this dish is a winner.
  • Bremerhaven Beet & Herring salad (Classic Northern German Salad with chopped Apples) — Beets, which contain the antioxidant betalain also made Dr. Oz’s top 4 list of anti-cancer superfoods. Mix in herring, a good source of selenium, Vitamin D, coenzyme Q10, and omega-3 fatty acids, and apples, rich in antioxidants and fiber, and this appetizer is also a good cancer-fighting pick.

First Course

  • Brasserie Salad (Mesclun Greens, roasted Beets, Goat Cheese, Candied Walnuts, Raspberry Vinaigrette) — Beets, greens high in folate and Vitamins A and D, and walnuts containing antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and estrogen-binding phytosterols create a healthy first-course or light dinner.
  • Broccoli Rabe & GarlicBroccoli rabe, containing cancer-fighting sulforaphanes, and garlic, a member of the American Institute for Cancer Research’s list of Foods that Fight Cancer, are a classic Italian combo and low-calorie to boot.

Main Course

  • Salmon Nicoise (Pan-seared Filet, grilled Olives, roasted Peppers, Garlic Wine sauce, whipped Potatoes) — Like most seafood, salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin D, and selenium. Combining this star of the sea with antioxidant- and fiber- rich olives and peppers ups the cancer-preventative ante.
  • Dutch Indonesian Crevettes (Shrimp sautéed in sweet Chili sauce, Savoy Cabbage, Shiitake Mushrooms & Jasmine Rice) — Superfood shrimp along with glucosinolate and antioxidant rich cabbage, and immune-boosting shiitake mushrooms combine to create a main course full of cancer-fighting fiber.
